NullPointerException
NullPointerException is a challenge added into Wave 4 of the Epiphany mod. The player character is Tarnished Eden, who starts with Glitched Photo and must defeat Mom's Heart. Completing the challenge unlocks Drawn Card.
Difficulty
Due to starting with Glitched Photo, all enemies and grid objects are randomized. Combined with Tarnished Eden's constantly rerolling stats and items, this can make this challenge wildly unpredictable and dangerous if the player has a bad time adapting to their situation or bad luck with randomized enemies. This challenge can be effectively thought of as playing a run with the D4 , D8 , D10 , and D12
Strategy
Tarnished Eden does not start with Debug in this challenge, which means that they cannot debug any items and keep them permanently. This makes it quite hard to properly strategize and requires the player to quickly adapt to their surroundings. Keep in mind that this challenge still keeps Tarnished Eden's smart reroll, preserving item's quality and pool when rerolling. Due to all enemies randomly being rerolled upon room entry, Eraser is less useful in this challenge due to it being unlikely to find the same enemy twice in quick succession.
As all grid objects are rerolled on room entry, keep an eye on what grid objects you may have to deal with; Purple Fires could spawn at any time, but TNT could spawn next to a tinted rock, potentially allowing for a free item. Being weary of what dangers this might pose, and what advantages it may give you is a good idea for the earliest and most difficult sections of the challenge
Tarnished Eden is still capable of turning enemies that hit them into Glitched Gapers. As Glitched Gapers can turn enemies they touch into more Glitched Gapers, it may be worth to take intentional damage by enemies in rooms with several difficult enemies in order to bring more levity to certain rooms.
Trivia
- In Java programming, a NullPointerException is a runtime exception that occurs whenever a variable is accessed that is not pointing to any object and refers to it as nothing, or null.
