Tarnished Lost is a character from the Epiphany mod, included as the third iteration of TheLost.png The Lost. He is unlocked by leaving TaintedLost.pngTainted Lost's Holy Card in the first floor's starting room, then picking the Broken orb.pngBroken Orb that will replace the card after defeating the first boss, collecting six Mantle shard.pngMantle Shards with it and entering a Bedroom afterwards.

It has been revealed via an ARG on 23rd October 2023. Its design and a few hints of its potential unlocks were later revealed in another ARG on December 24th, 2023.

First page.pngGameplay

Tarnished Lost starts with innate flight and spectral tears, as well as a 1.2x tears multiplier, rather than a damage multiplier. He also starts with the item DivineRemnants.pngDivine Remnants in his pocket active slot.

Similarly to TaintedLost.png Tainted Lost, Tarnished Lost has a passive item filter, rerolling certain items when they appear. However, unlike Tainted Lost, the only items Tarnished Lost can find naturally are items tagged offensive or nolostbr. Additionally, certain defensive items cannot spawn for him, such as Book of virtues.png Book of Virtues, Book of shadows.png Book of Shadows, and Lost contact.png Lost Contact.

Divine Remnants

Tarnished Lost's pocket active, Divine Remnants, both works as his main source of defense as well as gaining better items. While fully charged, Divine Remnants grants Tarnished Lost a shield similar to Holy mantle.png Holy Mantle. Breaking the shield will drain all charges from Divine Remnants and cause it to move up a level, increasing its maximum number of charges. Divine Remnants has 3 levels, which can be increased via either breaking the shield as mentioned before, or using it in a room without an item pedestal, which will also reroll all heart pick-ups in the room into other, more useful pick-ups, retaining the charge from the previous level.

On use, Divine Remnants will reroll all item pedestals in the room, similar to The D6.webpThe D6, and decrease it's level by one. The resulting item will not have the nolostbr tag, being able to turn useless items for Tarnished Lost into something useful. The resulting item's quality is dependent on Divine Remnant's current level, with a higher level meaning a higher chance to get better quality items

  • Level 1 (4 charges) - Rerolls items into items of quality 0 - 2
  • Level 2 (8 charges) - Rerolls items into items of any quality, functionally identical to a D6 reroll.
  • Level 3 (12 charges) - Rerolls items into items of quality 2 - 4

Challenge Charge

Tarnished Lost gains extra charges for both his active item and Divine Remnants when clearing certain rooms, mainly ones associated with fighting or bosses.

  • Challenge Rooms grant an additional charge after the final wave
  • Boss Challenge Rooms grant 2 charges after clearing each wave.
  • Mini-Boss Rooms grant an additional charge after defeating the boss.
  • Boss Rooms grant bonus charges depending on the state of Tarnished Lost's active item. For regular active items, the bonus is determined by the maximum number of charges of the held item, and for Divine Remnants, the bonus is determined by the item's level.
  • Entering ??? (the Hush floor) fully charges both Tarnished Lost's active item and Divine Remnants.

Old Knife small.pngStrategy

Similarly to its vanilla counterparts, Tarnished Lost is the embodiment of the high risk and high reward playstyle, with the added feature of Divine Remnants which allows the player to "customize" the run's risk level. Keeping the item at level 1 would grant a free Holy Mantle effect every 4 rooms, but with the downside of being able to find potentially useless items (since items with the nolostbr tag can normally spawn for this character), and being unable to exploit the character's full potential. Increasing Divine Remnants' level, on the other hand, will make the runs riskier given the fact the player could be forced to play without a Mantle effect for long periods, but with the benefit of rerolling useless items into potentially far more useful ones, with the Challenge Charge passive effect coming to help on that regard.

Dark power small.pngInteractions

  • Birthright.pngBirthright: Risk refund - Grants a chance to drop a Mantle Shard from Champion enemies, which will increase Divine Remnant's charge by 1 tick. Bosses always drop 3 Mantle Shards.

Story cube small.png Trivia

  • The official character trailer refers to Tarnished Lost as 'Reverie'.
  • An early version of Tarnished Lost was initially added in Wave 2 as a secret character accessible via the Debug menu in an unfinished state with a large red disclaimer at the center of the screen, and the majority of his sprites using TaintedLost.png Tainted Lost's as a placeholder. According to developer comments, that version of Tarnished Lost was an early concept and it would have been drastically different upon release. It has since then been removed with a subsequent update.
