Sharp Rock
Sharp Rock is an active quest item added in the Epiphany mod. This item can't be found normally, and it's obtainable only during the process of unlocking Tarnished Cain.
Effect
Sharp Rock can only be found on the first floor of a run when playing as Tainted Cain, in which a Sharp Rock obstacle will replace a random rock in the room. Blowing it up will have it drop the item, and when picked up, permanently replaces Cain's
Bag of Crafting with a pocket
Throwing Bag. This version of Throwing Bag is altered in the fact that it cannot be thrown, though it can be spun around to damage enemies, as well as bag nearby item pedestals to gain their effects.
While holding Sharp Rock, killed enemies will have a chance to drop Wheat, with a counter above Throwing Bag going up to 70 Wheat. Regular enemies will drop one wheat, while bosses drop up to 10. Collecting 70 Wheat will alter the next Sacrifice Room Cain enters, replacing the spikes at the center with an item pedestal containing a sheep that quickly ascends into a beam of light. Touching this pedestal will have Cain give away his wheat, before it is rejected, soon removing all of his items and warping him to a unique room containing a fight against Abel. After defeating Abel, his corpse is quickly replaced by a cowering Tarnished Cain, who, by touching him, is unlocked as a playable character, ending the run.
Abel
Abel is the boss fought before unlocking Tarnished Cain, initially found sitting at the center of the room peacefully. His fight comes in multiple phases.
Phase One
At the beginning of the fight, Abel sits idle in the room, periodically spawning Sheeps, which aimlessly roam around the room. These sheep deal contact damage and, when hit with tears, fire a wool projectile in a random direction. They can, however, be damaged by Cain swinging his bag, which will also damage Abel.
Phase Two
Upon reaching around 80% of health, Abel will appear bloody and concerned. He'll begin spawning in two Sheeps at once, while the rest of the fight is mostly the same.
Phase Three
Upon reaching 70% health, the Sheep next to Abel will be abducted by a beam of light. This will cause Abel to begin sobbing, periodically firing tears toward Cain, either as single shots or in spreads of 2 or 3. Beams of light will also periodically strike random parts of the room, which is capable of damaging the Sheep spawned in the previous phases.
Phase Four
When Abel reaches around 45% percent of his health, he will begin to run away from Cain, firing tears towards him. Beams of light will also strike the room randomly, like in the previous phase.
Phase Five
Upon reaching 20% of health, Abel will start heavily bleeding, leaving behind damaging red creep as he runs away at a slower speed than his previous phase, though he still fires tears and strikes the room with light beams. Upon death, Abel will lie down on the floor before Tarnished Cain takes his place.
Strategies
Wheat Collecting
- Upon taking Sharp Rock, Cain permanently loses the ability to craft items. As such, it is heavily recommended to craft as many useful items as you can on the first floor before taking Sharp Rock, as the lack of items will make later floors quite difficult.
- Enemies spawned via other enemies will not spawn wheat, so do not waste your time trying to grind with them.
- Pills can be very useful for collecting wheat, as they can grant permanent stat increases. Be weary, however, of the fact that they can also heavily weaken Cain.
- Though Cain cannot throw Throwing Bag, the spinning attack can be a useful tool for getting enemies away from you if you are cornered.
- Similarly, though most bagged synergies are ineffective due to them only activating when thrown, certain bags, like ones that have a chance to activate certain on-death effects, can still be useful.
- Bombs can act as a reliable tool for dealing high damage due to the minimal items collecting wheat allows. With Tainted Cain automatically turning item pedestals into pick-ups, he can find a surplus of bombs, which will be quite useful for dealing with higher-health enemies or bosses.
- While Throwing Bag can still bag placed bombs, this is not recommended, as Cain cannot throw it, thus acting as near guaranteed damage.
- Do note that bombs will not transfer to the Abel fight when it begins, however.
Abel Fight
- It is highly recommended to use your bag in order to fight Abel. Relying on tears only can leave yourself quickly overwhelmed by the sheeps and their projectiles due to their resistance to tears.
- With the bag damaging both the sheeps and Abel at the same time, using it can make the fight a cakewalk as long as you are careful.
- Try and get as much health as possible before fighting Abel. With the bag dealing the most damage, Cain must stay close to Abel, leaving him susceptible to damage from his tears and creep.
Trivia
- Tarnished Cain's entire unlock process is a clear reference to the biblical story of Cain and Abel, in which Cain was a farmer and Abel was a shepherd. Due to God favoring Abel's sacrifice, Cain grew jealous of Abel and murdered him with a sharp stone.
